# Settings and preferences

**Preferences** (the gear icon in the header) cover your personal defaults across every project: theme, auto-save, and language. **Project Settings**, reached from the project dropdown, covers one project's metadata and deletion instead. AI model selection is separate: see [Adding and managing models](/using-ai/ai-models-and-your-own-model.md).

## Adjust your preferences

### Open Preferences

Open **Settings** → **Preferences**.

### General

Set language and startup behavior.

### Editor

Set **Auto Save** and other editing defaults.

### Theme

Set your theme (**Light**, **Dark**, **System**) from **Settings**.

Changes apply immediately.

## Project settings

Open a project's name dropdown for **Project settings**: metadata, a file breakdown, and **Delete project**.

Deleting a project is permanent and can't be undone.

## Things to know

* Preferences are saved per browser. They don't follow you to another device unless you're logged in and Papers AI syncs your profile.
* Some account actions require you to be logged in. You'll be prompted if you try one anonymously.
